What Is Bible Quizzing?

“How can a young man keep his way pure?
   By guarding it according to your word.

 With my whole heart I seek you;
   let me not wander from your commandments!

I have stored up your word in my heart,
   that I might not sin against you.

Blessed are you, O Lord;
   teach me your statutes!

 With my lips I declare
   all the rules of your mouth.”

– Psalm 119:9-13 (ESV)

What is Quizzing?

Quizzing is a cross between a sport and a Bible study program. Bible quizzers study and memorize portions of Scripture, then compete against each other in teams to answer specific questions based on those verses. Bible Quizzing is a ministry of the C&MA, but churches from other denominations are also welcome to participate.

Quizzes and Meets

Meets are usually held on the second Saturday of the month, October through March. Every meet begins with a time of worship and a devotional, followed by several rounds of quizzing. Three teams of one to five quizzers compete in each round. In addition to the regular meets, there are opportunities for tournaments during the year.

Divisions

The Central District (eastern Ohio and West Virginia) has three divisions, Senior A, Senior B, and Junior. Senior divisions are for teens in seventh through twelfth grade, and Junior is for elementary students through grade six.

Material and Questions

This quiz program uses the New International Version (NIV) 2011 translation of the Bible and is on an eight-year rotating schedule of various New Testament books. Some types of questions asked will test a quizzer's general knowledge of a passage, while others require a word-perfect answer or knowledge of a verse by its reference. The question types are explained in more detail in this video.
